Working group 4: Epidemiology, pathology, geographical mapping and surveillance tools

This group will determine optimum poultry red mite monitoring methods, as well as reviewing the epidemiology, clinical and histo-pathological impact of poultry red mites in poultry systems.

Specific objectives:

  • i. Review the epidemiology, clinical and histopathological impact of poultry red mites in poultry. Taking into consideration different poultry systems (organic, free range, aviaries, cages, barns).
  • ii. Review the potential of spatial mapping tools to monitor and predict mite proliferation, also considering how this may be effected by and correlate with global warming.
  • iii. Produce data from countries without any information.

Cross-link questions:

  • How to compare poultry red mite control methods and monitoring strategies, and harmonize mite
collection, identification and prevention across countries? (cross-links between working groups 1, 3 and 4)
  • Are indicators available that can be used or developed for prediction of poultry red mite infestations? (Cross-links between working groups 1 and 4)
  • How can the targeted stakeholders use the findings? (Cross links between working groups 1, 3, 4 and working group 2)
